Cedar Log of Montana' uses the finest materials in its log homes
including the finest species of wood available, especially the
incomparable Western Red Cedar.
WESTERN RED CEDAR
Whether finished or rough, western
red cedar is the most beautiful wood on earth with a smooth grain,
elegant finish, and an unforgettable fragrance that will last
forever. Moreover, western red cedar is plentiful in supply.
Western red cedar also has many features that contribute to a
durable home as well. Walls need only be 3 to 4 inches thick
due to the wood's porosity. Heat retention and reflection of
heat back into the living space is high due to the wood's natural
porosity. Cedar is very stable in a wall system and aesthetically
pleasing with colors available from reddish pink to white and
brown.
Cedar has a low flame spread rate because of its lack of a resin
and its cellular structure. Because of its tight, straight grain,
cedar does not warp or twist like other woods can under adverse
conditions.
We help nature here by letting our logs season naturally or drying
them in a kiln. This process stabilizes the wood so it will not
adversely shrink when assembled. Log homes built from western
red cedar are reliable and durable.
Western red cedar also contains thujic acid, a natural resin
that repels moths, insects, termites and vermin, giving the wood
a high resistance to decay. Cedar's amazing natural defense system
doesn't stop there, however.
Cedar resists moisture well, and for this reason it is the preferred
wood for use in saunas around the world. Cedar also has the ability
to quickly absorb odors, too, sometimes overnight.
PINE
Pine is a lateral grain wood,
less porous than other species, and plentiful in supply. Homes
built with pine should have walls at least 10 inches thick to
retain heat. Pine has a plain color and can expand and contract
with changes in the humidity level.
FIR
Fir has a distinct grain and
it is less porous than other species, and it is also plentiful
in supply. The wall thickness should be at least 10 inches to
ensure heat retention. Like pine, it will expand and contract
with varying humidity levels. Fir can vary in color, mainly in
red and white.
POPLAR/ASPEN
Once cured, this softwood is
similar in strength and other qualities to hard wood. It is also
plentiful in supply and the recommended wall thickness is at
least 10 inches to ensure heat retention. It will expand and
contract due to varying humidity levels. Doweling is required
in the wall system.
