Cedar Log of Montana's log homes
provide comfort and energy efficiency as well as natural beauty.
LOG WALLS
Unlike conventional frame walls filled with insulation, log walls
have thermal mass. They can store energy and radiate it back
into the home. The wood is the insulation in our homes.
In each log wall, millions of
tiny air pockets insulate home occupants from the elements. As
an insulation system, log walls can be highly effective at blocking
heat transfer.
In a study by the Canadian National
Research Council, the western red cedar log building system was
found to be the most energy-efficient log building system for
the coldest climates regardless of home heating fuel used.
WALL THICKNESS & HEATING
In this 1995 report "Construction
Report for Solid Walls in Houses - Final Report" the National
Research Council reviewed costs of building a variety of round
and profiled log wall systems in every Canadian province.
The results showed that for the coldest Canadian region and the
most expensive heating fuel, a four-inch-thick case wall system
was the most energy-efficient log wall system studied. Past that
thickness of walls, no increase in energy payback could be justified
by making the walls thicker.
AIR TIGHTNESS OF LOGS
Abraham Lincoln would not recognize
our log homes. No chinking is required.
In fact, independent studies have shown that log homes built
from our building systems can be sealed as tightly or better
than the most energy-efficient home designs in the world.
In our log homes, saddle notch corners with tie-down rods ensure
a tight structural fit. Double tongue and groove joins ensure
logs fit together snuggly without caulking or gaskets.
STUDIES CONFIRM WHAT WE'VE HEARD
These studies have not served
to tell us anything we didn't already know about the qualities
of log homes.
But, they have confirmed what our customers have been telling
us for years.
A Cedar Log of Montana log home is warm, cozy, and yes, energy
efficient, too.
